Environment

From Roman origin, Radiquero, Rad Icarium or place rich in roots, it was one of the small towns that made up the Somontano region.

The landscape dotted with holm oaks and aromatic plants such as thyme, rosemary and lavender mixed with the crops of vines, almond trees and olive trees, mostly centenary, characterize the typical landscape of the towns located in the Sierra de Guara and especially of Radiquero .

Declared the area as a SPA (a special protection area for birds) one, the rock birds such as the Bearded Vulture, Bonelli's Eagle, Golden Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Eagle Owl, Egyptian Vulture, Treparriscos, Alpine Pipit stand out.

In this exceptional environment, it is not surprising that the cultivation of the vine and the production of excellent wines took place since the second century BC, which took off in the early twentieth century, favored by the birth of the Denomination of Origin "Somontano" in 1984.

In the River Vero Cultural Park, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998, we will find the oldest artistic constructions in Aragon: Archaeological sites and more than 60 shelters with articulated cave paintings following the course of the Vero River.

In a ravine in the Sierra de Guara, dug by the river Vero, stands the collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor, and at its feet the medieval town of the town of Alquézar declared a Historic-Artistic Site.

Above the Romanesque Collegiate Church, an old Muslim fortress. Below the village is grouped in the shape of a half moon to symbolize the Arab origin of the population. It owes its name to the castle or Al-Qasr built to defend the access to the capital of Barbitanya (Barbastro).

In addition to practicing canyoning, hiking routes can be done. It is possible to discover fountains, dams, mills and bridges. From Alquézar you can also visit the cave paintings of Quizans and Chimiachas.

In Somontano it is possible to walk through the Mediterranean forests, such as the Carrascal de Lizana in Barbuñales, delighting in the monumental trees such as the Quejigos de Otín, the Olivera de Nadal in Colungo, the Carrasca de Lecina or the Adahuesca.
